The Group
In the Fall of 2007 the story of the fellowship began. What began as a humble group of humans coming together to study the Bible grew to be so much more. Although their journey together was short, the legacy would last forever. Tales were told, laughs and interests were exchanged and a bond was formed between the six members. One tale in particular sparked the flame that grew into the legend of THE PEN. While the conversations that happen in Phil's office every Wednesday are kept as memories only among true members of "The Fellowship", the awesomeness that is John Coffman's D-Group is meant to be shared. I sound like a retard writing all this, but the spirit of the LOTR based website must go on! Here are their stories:
John "Gandolf" Coffman Valiant leader of the D-Group. John is willing to put up with the caffeine hyped, ADD/ADHD group of geeky homeschoolers and keep conversations focused. With shouts of "BOOK!" he courageously keeps our minds on what God's Word has to say about our lives. He's not entirely work and no fun. No, John is a fellow geek and video gamer with his own exciting, convicting and funny tales, and the biceps to flog another member should he fail to read his assignment (which of course is only funny to the rest of the group). He is a slightly balding missionary (Colin is not writing this, Tyler did it), amazing storyteller, health nut and profound theologian. Colin "Frodo" Hemphill Discoverer of The Pen and original penbearer. Colin is the brains, the humor, the wisdom and talent of the fellowship. I'm just kidding of course, but can you tell who is writing this description? As John would say and as Jonny would be yelling at me right now, "GOD HATES PRIDE!" So to keep from exalting myself I will stick to the facts. Colin is the one who discovered the pen in 2006 and told its story within the first few meetings of the fellowship. While it seemed like nothing but a funny story at the time, Colin had never fully appreciated the power that is The Pen until the group shared in its excellence. He is a proud ruler of geekdome, antisocial audio tech and guitar player for Junior High munchkins. Jonny "Gollum" Hill Resident spastic squirrel boy. No other member is more worthy of being compared to Gollum. His very nature gives explanation for warning labels on the back of energy drinks. His antics give definition to words and phrases like "hyper" and "second-wind". In fact, when Jonny's squirrel like instincts are in full force (such as a moshpit at a Stillpoint concert), these spasms can be unloaded in unintended accidents that even Tyler cannot stand up against. On Jonny's calmer side is an extremely caring and deep guy that still maintains a burning enthusiasm for Christ. Tyler "Elrond" Jones Yeah, so Tyler is hard to explain. I'm having a tougher time writing a profile for him than any other member. This should be interesting... Tyler finds enjoyment in beating on inferior noobs, both physically and mentally, in various fields of expertise. Whether its destroying chumps with star problems and exams in pre-cal, messin' with Swarbrick, getting money from Chase for a soda, or remarking about his hair, Tyler takes great pride in accomplishing superiority. He came to Texas just last year and seems to love Austin. Tyler considers being called a "Floridian" an insult and rather prefers being known as somebody from Colorado. One thing is for sure, Tyler has the most respect for The Pen of all the members and holds its secret close from outsiders. Go call him a Floridian, I dare you... AJ Spigelmire AJ is definitely the most down-to-earth of all the members. He tends to keep The Fellowship focused on reality, particularly when we get off topic talking about The Pen. Even John can get lost in conversation about fantasy when he's been playing World of Warcraft. After a close call our first semester, AJ was named a "traitor" in the group, but quickly redeemed himself as a valiant member of The Fellowship (he's probably hurling as he reads this right now). You do understand, I hope, that the language used on this site is meant for cynical purposes, right? AJ is unnamed on the geek/nerd/dork scale. He's too cool to really be labeled as one of those, but he possesses an above-average knowledge of computers and electronics that lean him close to the fence of geekdome. Chase "Pippen" Young The group's nominated and self-proclaimed "Lady's Man" and nerdly jock. Chase (or Manfred von Richtofen as he often refers to himself) is a math loving, derivative finding high schooler with hair like Napoleon Dynamite. He is Texas A&M obsessed and the first Young in many generations to NOT aspire to be in the military. Chase is also a boot and belt buckle wearing hick from Dripping Springs who likes to think that his closest neighbor is too far away to walk to. In general Chase loves playing Halo and World of Warcraft, consuming energy drinks and of course flirting with girls. Of course Chase's greatest obsession of all comes from his many years of butt-kicking in several forms of martial arts. NEW MEMBER: Josh Williams Josh joined The Fellowship in the 2008/2009 semester after a grueling initiation task of unspeakable torture. Josh's willingness to do almost anything people ask him to turns out to be a very entertaining quality. But Josh's persistence in joining the D-Group was epic to say the least. Before he was initiated, Fellowship members had to refer to Josh as "Mistake" when speaking to him, and "Mistake" was at their call at all times. I am exaggerating of course, but Josh has proven to be a devoted member. He is obsessed with G4 and playing his Xbox 360 as well as anything related to AC/DC. Josh fits in well with his extreme geekiness and his heart for God's mission. Josh might soon enough hear the story of The Pen himself and have the honor of wearing it around his neck for the week. Until then, we know that Josh is still an incredible member of The Fellowship. Unofficial Member: Kyrsten Kelly Kyrsten deserves a mention on this site as an unofficial member of The Fellowship only because of the heinous act that gave her knowledge of The Pen. The first Monday that we brought The Pen in after sharing the story in D-Groups, Kyrsten instantly recognized the importance of The Pen to us and sought to steal its power for herself. In an effort to recover The Pen, Chase, Tyler and I lost three dollars and had to tell her the story of The Pen. Kyrsten became one of only two non-members who knows the story of The Pen. The other non-member is Jonathan Baker, and he forgot the story so we're not going to tell him again, and he doesn't deserve a bio.
